Animal Assisted Therapy

Learn More About Animal Assisted Therapy

Introduction to Animal Assisted Therapy

Most people these days have pets that are a vital part of their lives. Pets are just as much family as the people we live with or are related to. Animals provide many benefits to our everyday lives, so it’s no surprise that using animals in addiction therapy is now becoming a common practice. You might be wondering what animals can do for someone in rehab, but just like we all need that extra bit of love and support in our daily lives, so do those recovering from addiction.

At Atlanta Recovery Place, we pride ourselves on bringing whatever treatments and resources to the table for our clients to complete treatment. Part of that commitment is offering animal-assisted therapy in Georgia as part of our treatment options. Animal-assisted therapy is a supplemental treatment that can be combined with traditional therapy and support to increase the odds of success and to help the client cope with their addiction and return to a normal life once treatment is complete.

Animal-assisted therapy is an approach to holistic treatment that can be effective for mental health and substance abuse. Contact our Georgia drug and alcohol treatment center today to learn more.

"ARP saved my life. Simple as that. When I gave up on myself, ARP was there every second of the way to push me to be the best and drag me out of the deep hole I was in. There are so many great things I could say, so it’s gonna be hard to condense everything. The staff is wonderful."

The apartments were extremely nice and the girl community there was solid. During my stay at ARP I was able to work on me mentally, physically, and eventually spiritually. What is an Animal Assisted Addiction Treatment Program?

An Atlanta animal-assisted therapy program is an addiction treatment program that combines service animals with the addiction treatment process to improve outcomes. Specially trained service animals are used much in the same way that they are used in other medical programs, such as physical therapy to recover from injuries, nursing homes, veteran care, and other programs.

The animals are trained to interact with people dealing with and suffering from addiction and can help them in a variety of ways under the direction of a licensed therapist and a trainer. Over the course of treatment, service animals have been shown to improve positive outcomes and improve the overall rehab experience for the client. Unlike other instances where animals are used for treatment, animal-assisted therapy does not replace the traditional therapy that a person undergoes while in rehab; it merely adds to it. A person may have a normal therapy session or group session and then follow that up with therapy sessions with animals. By combining the two together, the benefits of both are maximized.

We evaluate each client based on need and assign them the types of treatment that will work best for their situation. Atlanta Recovery Place offers an array of treatment options at our Georgia recovery center, so before we decide on a treatment plan for any client, we decide on their needs based on an individual assessment. We have found that most clients respond to our Georgia animal-assisted therapy program.

FINDING THE RIGHT TREATMENT FOR YOU

Why Use Animals in Addiction Treatment?

If you’ve never seen animals used in therapy before, you may be skeptical about the benefit they can have in a rehab treatment setting. What makes animals useful in a rehab setting is that many of the same benefits they have in other settings can translate directly to a rehab setting.

Service animals can offer support and comfort to those who are dealing with anxiety, depression, and other issues. This is particularly important to those in dual diagnosis treatment, which deals with the combination of mental illness and addiction that co-occur at the same time.

Animals have been proven to provide stress relief and promote calmness and relaxation, all of which are key to a healthy and successful recovery. Companionship is another big benefit to the treatment process, as many clients feel lonely when going through the treatment process.

One of the most impressive benefits of animal-assisted therapy that is not seen with other alternative therapy is that animals help those skeptical about rehab to feel more comfortable with the process and confident in successfully completing the program. This alone can drastically improve the outcomes of clients who might otherwise relapse or struggle with the treatment process.

Service animals can be a tool to help those in recovery express themselves, even emotions buried because of the addiction. This can be the first step in understanding why someone became addicted in the first place. It is also essential in reforging bonds with family and friends that have been damaged as a result of addiction.

TYPES OF ANIMALS

What Types of Animals Are Used in Animal Assisted Therapy in Georgia?

The two most common animals used in animal-assisted therapy are horses and dogs. Dogs offer companionship and loyalty as well as a range of different activities that can be performed with them, such as going on walks and interacting in a playful manner. Horses are used in more active forms of therapy, such as riding. Horse therapy is excellent for promoting focus and control when dealing with an animal, two things that also translate well when dealing with other people.

The specifics of your individual program will vary based on your needs. Some types of therapy may be more beneficial than others, but this will be determined based on your personal evaluation at the time of treatment. We will work with you to find the best animal and therapy for you when you come to us for treatment at Atlanta Recovery.
