Learn More About Family Therapy

Introduction to Family Therapy

It’s easy to see why some people who are suffering from addiction may feel alone in their struggle. Addiction can make you push others away and cause stress for the people around you. Not only that, the focus on using drugs or alcohol can damage the interpersonal relationships that a person once had. This doesn’t mean that all is lost, though; it doesn’t mean that family does not have a place in the treatment process. The support of family and friends can make the difference between whether a person is successful in completing their addiction treatment and goes on to stay sober and whether they ultimately relapse again.

For that reason, treatment centers like our Georgia recovery center have begun using family therapy to help our clients and their families overcome their struggles with addiction. Our family therapy in Georgia is one way to ensure that our clients have the highest chance of a successful recovery. By rebuilding relationships and learning from past mistakes, our clients learn the true cost of addiction and how to move forward without the need for drugs and alcohol.

Here we are going to discuss the need for a Georgia family therapy rehab program, what it does for the treatment process, and how our Atlanta Recovery facility offers family therapy as well as a full range of treatment options for whatever type of addiction you may be suffering from.

"I got to ARP in October of 2021 And they were all very welcoming and real. That was the first thing that made it easy to adapt into this new environment. The apartments were extremely nice and the girl community there was solid. During my stay at ARP I was able to work on me mentally, physically, and eventually spiritually. The counselors there are all great."

What is Family Therapy in Georgia?

Family is one of the essential support systems that a person can have. This is why involving family in the addiction treatment process is so important. Family’s role in the process will change based on the person being treated and the family involved. Family may play a more active role in the treatment process for children and adolescents. In contrast, for adults, the family may receive treatment separately and play a more supportive role for the person in treatment. This is subjective and can change depending on the situation and the needs of the client.

Family therapy may involve family members receiving counseling and other treatment services that focus on problems caused by the addict. The therapy sessions focus on learning how to deal with a family member with addiction, expressing emotions and concerns regarding the addict, and learning how to cope effectively and rebuild positive relationships with the addicted family member.

The family may also be brought into the treatment process for the person with the addiction to offer insight and support and observe what that person is going through. Therapy is always performed with a licensed therapist who evaluates the needs of the family and the primary client to determine how to best assist in completing treatment and moving on to the next phase of recovery. From there, they can come up with a plan to deal with the issues facing both the family members and the addict while the addicted person is in treatment, with the goal of both parties coming together in the end and rebuilding the connections that were lost due to addiction.

How Does Family Therapy Help With the Treatment Process?

Family therapy is never performed alone, it is always done in conjunction with other rehab treatment programs. The main thing that family therapy is concerned with is opening the lines of communication between family members and the person in treatment.

It can be hard to realize the scope of the damage that has been done as a result of an addiction, but once the family is able to understand what the addicted family member is going through and they are able to healthily express their feelings, it makes repairing the damage done to relationships possible.

Addiction treatment means ridding yourself of the addiction, but also healing the damage that was done because of the addiction. If you are ready to start the healing process, come to our facility at Atlanta Recovery and see how our Atlanta family therapy program works and what types of treatment you need.

Why You Need a Georgia Family Therapy Rehab Program

Relationships are inevitably damaged as a result of addiction. If you think that family therapy is unnecessary in rehab, you’d be shocked to find out this is not true. To truly recover from addiction and to prevent relapse, the person in treatment has to identify the behavior that went along with their addiction, the damage they caused and what that means for family and friends.

Only by understanding the full scope of their addiction and coming to terms with it can they rebuild the bonds that were shattered as a result. The support provided by friends and family is crucial for long term recovery, so if the person does not learn to repair the damage they have caused, they may find that they do not have the support of those they care about as they enter the next phase of recovery.

One of the hardest things that loved ones of a person with addiction deal with is getting their loved one to admit that they have a problem and accept that they need help. If this sounds like something that your family is struggling with, you may want to talk with our staff about our drug intervention treatment options that help family member plan an intervention for their loved one to get the help they need.
