What is a Substance Use Disorder, Exactly?
Before seeking addiction treatment in Knoxville from any location, you might want some clarification on what, exactly, substance use disorder, or SUD, is. No two people experience SUD the same way, but the following are strong indications that a credible healthcare worker (usually a medical doctor, psychiatrist, or psychologist) might diagnose you with SUD:
- Your substance use makes it challenging to work, attend school, take care of yourself or your family, or fulfill other basic responsibilities.
- You have to take greater amounts of the substance to feel the same effects you felt in the beginning.
- You are unable to cut down or stop using the substances despite repeated earnest attempts to do so.
- Your substance use has resulted in financial difficulties.
- You have experienced dramatic mood or personality changes since you started using substances.
- You often experience withdrawal symptoms when you don’t use substances; these symptoms might include:
- Insomnia
- Trembling
- Irritability
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Muscle aches
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea and vomiting
It is extremely rare for people experiencing SUD to achieve long-lasting sobriety without tailored, evidence-based treatment. The first thing that Atlanta Recovery Place does for new clients is a thorough initial assessment in which we note all relevant medical and behavioral information. That allows us to deliver targeted SUD treatment.

You Might Not Be a Good Fit for Drug Rehab in Knoxville if…
We get a lot of questions from potential clients about the services we offer and how they might benefit from them. Our Knoxville-area drug rehab center offers three tiers of outpatient drug rehab. Outpatient medical care describes treatment that can be delivered without the client having to stay at a facility overnight.
Many people experiencing SUD are in active addiction and need professional assistance while they detoxify from whichever substances they are using. In rare cases, substance withdrawal symptoms can be life-threatening. That situation is best handled under close, 24/7 supervision at an inpatient facility.
Atlanta Recovery Place does not offer inpatient or detoxification services. We would be happy to help you find such a facility, and we often receive clients who just completed a stay at an inpatient facility. Additionally, you might not benefit greatly from our facility if you are not living with SUD. Although we offer dual-diagnosis treatment, individuals with only mental health conditions might not be a good fit for our programs.
LET US HELP YOU.
About Our Outpatient Addiction Treatment Near Knoxville
Individuals who are often good fits for our facility are those who need ongoing therapy and care for SUD but have a stable home environment they can return to at the end of each day. Our Knoxville-area drug rehab center offers three levels of care for outpatient services—each one has a different weekly time commitment.
The highest level of outpatient care is known as partial hospitalization. Despite its name, you don’t have to go to an actual hospital to receive treatment. You’ll get everything you need at our facility. Most PHPs—including ours—are designed to provide clients with many of the same therapeutic interventions they would get at an inpatient facility. To accomplish that, most clients receive PHP treatment 4–6 hours per day (for around 20 total hours per week).
One step down from PHP is our intensive outpatient program. You’ll still receive a variety of therapies to help you walk the path to recovery and sobriety, but you won’t spend quite as much time at our center. IOP clients in Georgia usually receive treatment at least nine hours per week; the upper part of the range rarely exceeds 20 hours.
IOP clients have a little more flexibility than PHP clients. It’s common for PHP clients to shift down to our IOP after they have success in that highest level of care. Cost is also a factor in many clients’ decisions to enroll in PHP or IOP rather than an inpatient program.
The third and least restrictive level of outpatient care is simply called a regular outpatient drug rehab program. Regular outpatient clients receive less than nine hours of treatment per week and are generally able to hold down full-time jobs. SUD is a lifelong condition, and it’s not uncommon for those in recovery to receive treatment indefinitely. That doesn’t change one of our main goals, which is to equip you with healthy coping skills so you can feel secure and empowered as you reenter the outside world.
What Our Clients Have to Say

Types of Therapies We Provide Clients
One-on-one therapy is an essential part of our SUD treatment, but it is far from the only type of therapy we offer clients. Depending on your needs, you might receive several different therapies at Atlanta Recovery Place. We believe in the importance of treating the entire client, as SUD is often just one piece of the puzzle.
Some of the therapies we offer include:
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). You will learn how certain thought patterns can influence your behaviors and cravings related to SUD. Over time, you can grasp skills to help you stop these unhelpful thought patterns and replace unhealthy behaviors.
- Art therapy. Many people feel more comfortable talking about stressful feelings or experiences as they create art or engage in music therapy. Getting your creative juices flowing can also help you express yourself in ways that words may not offer. Clients have had success using art and music therapy as a complementary therapeutic intervention.
- Group therapy. Being around other people who understand the complexities of SUD is invaluable. Group therapy is a great way to connect with other clients who are walking a similar path. You can discover crucial insights to help you work toward sustained recovery and make lifelong friends.
- Family therapy. The dynamics you have with your immediate family and loved ones affect so many of your behaviors. Family therapy can help you refine communication skills, recognize the ways that interpersonal relationships can impact your SUD, and develop a plan to move forward toward recovery with a loving familial unit.
- Yoga therapy. Holistic therapy means treating the entire person, and that involves more than just one-on-one psychotherapy. Yoga and other mindfulness activities have been shown to be effective in helping participants regulate their moods and decrease feelings of anxiety.
The above list is not exhaustive. Our staff is committed to giving you the best chances of success and long-lasting sobriety. We don’t hesitate to think outside the box for your benefit.
